Ethics
We are committed to telling stories of women in developing countries with respect and accuracy. Our team is highly experienced in working with vulnerable communities and commits to best practice reporting and storytelling while in the field.
Editorial Independence
We subscribe to standards of editorial independence adopted by the Institute for Nonprofit News (INN):
We retain full authority over editorial content to protect the best journalistic and business interests of our organization. We maintain a firewall between news coverage decisions and sources of all revenue. Acceptance of financial support does not constitute implied or actual endorsement of donors or their products, services, or opinions.
We accept gifts, grants, and sponsorships from individuals and organizations for the general support of our activities, but our news judgments are made independently and not on the basis of donor support.
Our organization may consider donations to support the coverage of particular topics, but our organization maintains editorial control of the coverage. We will cede no right of review or influence of editorial content, nor of unauthorized distribution of editorial content.
Our organization will make public all donors who give a total of $5,000 or more per year. We will accept anonymous donations for general support only if it is clear that sufficient safeguards have been put into place that the expenditure of that donation is made independently by our organization and in compliance with INN’s Membership Standards.
Donor Transparency
We are committed to transparency in every aspect of funding our organization.
Accepting financial support does not mean we endorse donors or their products, services, or opinions.
We accept gifts, grants, and sponsorships from individuals, organizations and foundations to help with our general operations, coverage of specific topics, and special projects. Our news judgments are made independently—not based on or influenced by donors. We do not give supporters the rights to assign, review, or edit content.
We will make public all donors who give $5,000 or more per year. As a nonprofit, we will not accept donations from anonymous sources, government entities, political parties, elected officials, or candidates actively seeking public office. We will not accept donations from sources who, deemed by our board of directors, present a conflict of interest with our work or compromise our independence.
Code of Ethics
Ripple’s creative team is accountable for upholding the following standards in their work:
- Be accurate and comprehensive in the representation of subjects.
- Avoid manipulating situations and staged photo opportunities.
- Be complete and provide context when photographing or recording subjects. Avoid stereotyping individuals and groups. Recognize and work to avoid presenting one’s own biases in the work.
- Treat all subjects with respect and dignity. Give special consideration to vulnerable subjects and compassion to victims of crime or tragedy.
- While photographing subjects, do not intentionally contribute to, alter, or seek to alter or influence events.
- Editing should maintain the integrity of the photographic images’ content and context. Do not manipulate images or add or alter sound in any way that can mislead viewers or misrepresent subjects.
- Do not pay sources or subjects or reward them materially for information or participation.
- Do not accept gifts, favors, or compensation from those who might seek to influence coverage.
- Do not intentionally sabotage the efforts of other journalists.
- Do not engage in harassing behavior of colleagues, subordinates, or subjects and maintain the highest standards of behavior in all professional interactions.
Ripple Effect Images journalists should:
- Focus on female-led solutions by women and children in developing nations.
- Think proactively, as students of psychology, sociology, politics, and art to develop a unique vision and presentation. Work with a voracious appetite for current events on women and children in developing countries and contemporary visual media.
- Strive for total and unrestricted access to subjects, recommend alternatives to shallow or rushed opportunities, seek a diversity of viewpoints, and work to show unpopular or unnoticed points of view.
- Avoid political, civic, and business involvements or other employment that compromise or give the appearance of compromising one’s own journalistic independence.
- Be unobtrusive and humble in dealing with subjects.
- Respect the integrity of the photographic moment.
- Strive by example and influence to maintain the spirit and high standards expressed in this code. When confronted with situations in which the proper action is not clear, seek the counsel of those who exhibit the highest standards of the profession. Visual journalists should continuously study their craft and the ethics that guide it.
Conflict of Interest
Ripple’s Conflict of Interest policy adopted by our Board of Directors protects the interests of the organization when it is contemplating entering into a transaction or arrangement that might benefit the private interest of an officer or director.
