Lack of clean water and malnutrition lead to nearly half of all childhood deaths before age five. During a child’s first 1,000 days, proper nutrition is vital. Without it, the risk is high for life-long health issues like blindness, developmental disabilities and organ shutdown. In some areas, women and girls walk as many as 11 hours each day to haul poor quality water to keep their families alive. Church World Service has launched innovative water programs in many places around the world, providing cleaner water to hundreds of communities. When water is available, women and girls who once spent their day fetching water are able to go to school and start small industries.
